What a wonderful day with great weather, terrific company and some quite reasonable tennis as well. After 39 matches of eight games each the afternoon ended with Bayview on 156 games and Careel Bay also on 156 games! Bayview retain the trophy but already plans are being formulated for the 2019 event! Many thanks to all the organisers and bbq chefs.

Club Captain & Tournament Referee update (3/June/2018)

Dear Members,

Sizzling Sunday really lived up to its expectations and saw the final matches and close of the 2018 Careel Bay Open. Thank you to the spectacular crowd of around 40 members who came down (rugged up) to enjoy the tennis and the sausage sizzle.

The Men’s Singles Match saw Andrew Riminton victorious over Adrian Venturi (our reigning champion) 6-1, 6-0.

This was followed by the Men’s Doubles Match which saw the father and son team of Andrew and Phil Riminton victorious over Adrian Venturi and Brett Nicholson in a hard fought 7-6 (7-1), 4-6 and 6-3 .

With the close of the Open, I’d like to thank all players for their participation, the Selection Committee for their grading of the players, special mention to Charles Perry, Peter Gorian for the sausage sizzle, Sandra Morgan and all of the ladies on or who assisted the Social Committee with their cakes, slices and sandwiches.

A few lessons to be learned - whilst we try to accommodate players if an emergency should come up (or paramedics who don’t know their night roster) but if you are unable to play all dates of the competition then you should not enter the tournament.  Apart from the difficulties this creates for scheduling, it is unfair to other members who did not enter because they knew they were not available for one or more dates in the tournament. Also a little tennis etiquette for all, please be mindful not to move behind courts when competition play is in progress but wait for a suitable break in play.

I’d like to thank the Committee and the Club Members for allowing me to be the tournament referee for the 2018 Open.

Till next time, happy hitting to all.

James CHANNON
Tournament Referee

Special note from your Club Committee:

The club was very fortunate to have James as club captain and tournament referee for this year's Open. Some club members may not be aware that James has officiated at a number of major tennis tournaments including the Sydney International and Melbourne Australian Open as well numerous local Sydney tennis events.

We would like to especially thank James for all the work and effort he has put into making this years Club Open Championship such a great success.  Numerous club members have commented on what a fantastic tournament it was for the competitors and spectators alike.  The great atmosphere, sportsmanship and quality of tennis has been memorable.

Just one minor correction to James' message, our club secretary Helen recorded 54+ club members attended a very exciting final's day as well as a large number of visitors including family, friends and past club members. This sense of club and community involvement marked a fitting end to the club's 40th Anniversary Open event.

Congratulations to all.
