Mixed doubles handicap event

It was back in 1979, 47 years ago, that P.Frost + K.Gibb teamed together and took out the inaugural CBTC Mixed Doubles Handicap trophy. Two years later Tom Bartle’s grandfather H.Bartle and his partner M.Hoffmann were the winners.

Fast forward to 2026 and despite a very hot early September day, 32 members took to the courts last Saturday to vie for the trophy. In some cases, new friendships were formed as members were paired into 16 teams to play four eight-game sets across what was a very enjoyable afternoon.

Andrea Park + Duncan Hyde tied with Michelle Lusty + Graeme Saunders for the most games won but took out the title based on the handicap system. So it will be Andrea and Duncan who will be the next to have their names engraved on the suitably funky 70’s perpetual trophy.

Thanks to Club Captain Andrej Budja assisted by Michelle Lusty for organising the day and to the Social Committee for all the wonderful food.  Special mention to Chris’s fabulously fresh tuna nicoise salad, the perfect end to the hot day. There was lots of appreciative feedback which makes all the effort that goes into these days worthwhile.
